Your perfect late summer skincare routine

How to change up your skin care routine for summer

We sure are experiencing a heatwave; it is so darned hot! And in this kind of sticky heat, the last thing you want to apply is heavy, creamy skin care – particularly if you are prone to clogged pores and breakouts from sweat and sun protection products.

The solution: A summer skin care swap

At this time of year I like to switch to products that have a light, quickly absorbed texture that help to protect the skin’s acid mantle, but without weighing it down and making me feel (or look!) greasy.

Start by swapping your cream or oil cleansers for something light and foaming

My Lavender Foaming Cleanser gently cleans and soothes the skin, while lavender essential oil’s disinfectant and antimicrobial properties are helpful if you suffer from pimples and breakouts.

Double cleanse in the evening

This will leave your skin feeling fresh and remove the day’s grime. Wash twice with Lavender Foaming Cleanser. I love to use a muslin facecloth to help remove excess product, while gently exfoliating at the same time. If you’re removing waterproof sunblock and makeup, then try Lavender Micellar Water to thoroughly cleanse and tone your skin first. You can then follow up with Lavender Foaming Cleanser, and a quick swipe with my Frankincense Toner will hydrate your skin. It’s a stunning blend of Lavender, Frankincense, Neroli and cornflower hydrosols so it smells divine too. I like to keep it in the fridge for an extra cooling boost.

Moisturiser is still important, even if your skin feels oily

My Lavender Moisturiser is my go-to all year round. It’s a nourishing blend of Rosehip, Pomegranate and Macadamia nut oils, but is light and absorbs quickly.

Always apply sunblock when you’re heading outside

I’ve already had a mole removed and don’t want to go through that again. I choose natural mineral sunblocks with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients. They work by sitting on top of the skin to block harmful UV rays, unlike chemical sunblocks which are absorbed into the skin. Better still, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are best for the beach as these ingredients are less harmful to corals and are not linked to coral bleaching.

Nourish any burns ASAP

If you miss a patch of skin with your sunblock application, I like to apply pure aloe vera gel (scraped straight from the leaves of the plant) and if the skin gets itchy and starts to peel my Mango & Kokum Balm can help to soothe the situation.
